In 2019 U.S. authorities apprehended Subhash Kapoor, a respected New York art dealer and one of the most prolific art smugglers in the world. "Operation Hidden Idol" recovered over $140 million in stolen artifacts, artworks and statues. Kapoor was charged with 86 crimes as the alleged mastermind of a looting network that spanned the globe. Ancient temples and archeological sites in the Middle East, along South East Asia and India were targeted. Precious antiquities were sold and even loaned to prestigious museums to legitimize their handling.
