EN: “Dud” (or murva) is the Croatian name for mulberry . It is a tree that has very sweet fruit, and there are black, red and white species of mulberries. The fruit is very fragile, for this reason, it is not found on the markets as it doesn’t last long when picked from the tree. Actually, it falls from the tree very easily (and then sticks to the ground creating a sticky mass, so be careful where you walk), so the best way to eat it is to carefully remove it from the (low) branch. It has to be ripe, and that happens in June (so sorry if you found this cache outside its season, make a note to return here in June!).
People in Croatia don’t usually eat them because it is not very common, and they don’t know any better. Hope this cache will convince you otherwise! There is a “dud” tree inside the parking lot (free access), just 20m southeast of this cache, and it should be ripe at the publication of this cache. Attention on the fact that fruits release a dark juice which is not easily removed! Enjoy!
P.S. There is a rumor that John Lennon came to Croatia and was so fascinated by this fruit and its healing power that he wrote a song about it, “Hey Dud!”. McCartney later thought John was under some drugs influence, and changed the title to “Hey Jude!”. Fact or fiction? You be the judge…
Hey Dud, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.
Still not convinced?
Hey Dud, don't be afraid.
You were made to go out and get her.
The minute you let her under your skin,
Then you begin to make it better.
