Geocache Description:


Railway bridge over Shikma river

During British rule the bridge was part of the railway that led from the city of El Qantara on the banks of the Suez Canal to Haifa

During the Israeli War of Independence, Palmach units blew up the bridge and cut off the track to the Gaza Strip. The nearby Deir Suneid train station ceased operations.

After the Six Days War, the bridge was restored, and the Gaza Tel Aviv railway line was opened. The line was used by workers from  Gaza and also passengers from Tel Aviv who continued from Gaza to Sinai.

In 1973, due to the closure of the railway line to Sinai via Gaza, the Deir Suneid station was closed.

בתקופת השלטון הבריטי, הגשר היה חלק ממסילת רכבת שהובילה מהעיר קנטרה על גדות תעלת סואץ לחיפה

במלחמת העצמאות פוצצו יחידות יוצאי הפלמ"ח את הגשר וניתקו את המסילה לרצועת עזה. תחנת הרכבת דיר סנייד הסמוכה חדלה מלפעול

אחרי מלחמת ששת הימים הגשר שוקם, ונפתח קו הרכבת תל אביב עזה. הקו שימש את פועלי רצועת עזה וגם נוסעים מתל אביב שהמשיכו מעזה לסיני

בשנת 1973, עקב סגירת קו הרכבת לסיני דרך עזה נסגרה תחנת דיר סניד

מהגשר יש תצפית יפה על אפיק נחל שקמה
