Il lavatoio aveva un ruolo importante nell'economia domestica di ogni famiglia e nella vita sociale delle donne del paese che si ritrovavano al lavatoio spesso anche in gruppi numerosi. L'utilizzo dei lavatoi pubblici è un'attività ormai abbandonata come abbandonati sono anche molti storici lavatoi come quello di Villa di Chiavenna alle Case Scattoni, oggi coperto e raggiungibile solo tramite scale o gallerie. Il grande ambiente del lavatoio è interessante. Le gallerie e l'ampio spazio delle vasche sono illuminati in modo discreto con ombre e penombre che danno all'ambiente un atmosfera un pò inquietante, quasi un "Lost Place" al centro di un paese. Nel silenzio delle gallerie sembra di sentire, tra lo scorrere dell'acqua, il chiacchiericcio delle lavandaie della foto storica qui sotto.
