This is my first hide and decided to place it at the ruins of The “Sitan Kale” Fortress which is a less known sightseeing location around Bansko but still worth a visit.
The fortress dates back to the III century and was built to protect the roman road which passed through the valley in the Pirin mountains.
Getting there
It's about a 30minute hike from the parking spot or you can walk up the ski road from town to get to the "Peshterite" restaurant where these instructions begin. Cross the bridge over the main river and then take the dirt road ahead of you, crossing the little stream and leaving the restaurant on your right. Follow the dirt road and you will walk past a building site for glamping. Where the road curves around the building site take the wide trail on your left that goes up the mountain which soon turns into a gravel road. Follow it until you reach the signs for the Sitan Kale fortress. Then the fortress is easy to find up the steep path.
It may also be accessible in winter depending on snow cover in these lower parts of the mountain.
The cache
A small glass jar with a red lid. It's hidden slightly to the side of the archaeological site, so please DON'T DISTURB any of the actual fortress ruins. If you are struggling due to poor GPS coverage have a look at the spoiler image of me pointing to the location.
