PERMISSION:
This earthcache was placed with permission of the Chief of Resource Management and Interpretation, Blue Ridge Parkway.
EARTHCACHE REQUIREMENTS:
Each cacher must send in their own answers when logging this find. After you arrive at the overlook, enjoy the view and what you will bring home with you through this experience. Review the materials below and answer by message/email the questions to the best of your ability. Enjoy your time at this beautifiul location. Please follow all logging requirements. Please do not post your answers in with logging your find.
FOLDS AND FAULTS:
Folding and faulting are the most common type of deformation processes. When rocks are compressed, folding occurs as the layers begin to buckle and fold. Faulting occurs as rocks fracture under the build up of extreme stress created by extensional forces and compression. Folds in rocks vary in size from tiny crinkles to mountain-sized folds. Folds occur when strata is bent. Faults occur when the strata breaks.

APPEARANCE:
Chevron - Repeated set of v-shaped beds.
Crenulation (Crinkles) - Small folds caused by two or more stress directions.
Drag - Minor fold lying between beds of a major fold
Isoclinal - Symmetrical and parallel to each other
Monocline - Dip in one direction between horizontal layers on each side
Plunging - Not horizontal
Ptygmatic - Chaotic, random and disconnected
Recumbent - Horizontal oriented at a low angle resulting in overturned strata in one limb of the fold.

OVERLOOK:
From the parking area for the French Broad Overlook, you will be able to observe several things. First is the French Broad River itself, thought to be at least 250 million years old. Another is the geological feature that this lesson is about. Lots to see and discover.
QUESTIONS TO ANSWER:
1. What type of fold can you identify?
2. How would you describe the over all appearance of this geologic feature?
3. What kind of process do you think caused this fold to occur?
4. Post a picture at or near the coordinates (you do not have to be in the picture unless you want to). This is your log signature.
Congratulations to FLtravelers for being FTF 7-1-22.
