Hidden among the lush foliage of 'ohia lehua, crepe myrtle, autograph trees, ferns, ti leaf, "waiwi" plants, and monstera deliciosa vines, is a rather steep staircase that leads down into a natural subterranean wonder. The area is known as the "Kaumana Caves State Park." An indepth history of the formation of the caves and an extensive geological description are provided in a separate EarthCache geocache.
The Caves are one of the "must-sees" on the Hilo side of the Big Island. Visitors who travel the Saddle Road will often stop to briefly explore the area on their way down into Hilo town or when travelling to the west side of the island. However, as an islander living less than two miles from the caves, they did not "attract" me, until very recently. When I returned as a "tourist" and took those steep stairs down into the tubes, "WOW" is what came to mind. Why had I never before explored these caves? So, even if you've lived here all of your life or for a very long time and have NOT visited the Caves, do come and be amazed! You will not be disappointed!
This cache is hidden above ground. Because it is a visitors' attraction, DO exercise extreme stealthiness. You may need to return on a different day and/or time to locate it. PLEASE replace it as found as it is easily muggable! You will need to bring your own pen. Good luck and have fun! MAHALO!
