Rýchlosť svetla je veľmi veľká. Jej veľkosť sa pokúšal odmerať aj taliansky fyzik Galileo Galilei. Ako prvý však určil hodnotu rýchlosti svetla v roku 1675 dánsky astronóm Olavs Romer(1664-1710).
Rýchlosť svetla je (po zaokrúhlení) približne 300 000 km/s a je najväčšia rýchlosť v prírode. Nič sa nemôže pohybovať väčšou rýchlosťou ako svetlo. Neskôr, v 19. st. sa zistilo, že rovnakou rýchlosťou sa šíria aj signáli, ktoré v súčasnosti vysielajú televízne a rozhlasové stanice.
V rozličných optických prostrediach je rýchlosť svetla rôzna, ale vždy je menšia ako vo vákuu. Rýchlosť svetla vo vode sa rovná asi trom štvrtinám rýchlosti svetla vo vzduchu.
