This is the well to be visited with care as the traditions associated with it are concerned with ill fortune rather than with healing or good luck !! It is the site where Cardiho , who is mentioned in the Domesday book as holding this manor of Dunsland from Earl Baldwin, he was reported to have killed the previous Saxon owner for possession of the land.
A chapel stood near the well but was demolished in the 16th century by one Humphrey Arscott who feared that he would lose his inheritance if his widowed mother went ahead with plans to remarry. A tradition of a ghostly horseman is associated with the Oscott family here.
The curse on this estate continued most recently when, after extensive renovations by the National Trust, the magnificent house on the site was completely destroyed by fire ; nothing now remains apart from a small stable building and the well .
