Chinaman's Hat 0830-0900
Recently I walked completely across from Kualoa Beach Park to Chinaman's Hat (Mokoli'i). The water never reached my waist and it was awesome fun! I have been to the island before but (funny story) only by kayak.
This walk can be done easialy when the tide is at its lowest, at a negative tide. This doesn't happen often, and even more rarely does it happen on a weekend. On this date the tide will be at -0.34 feet at 0845. You can check the windward tide chart here: Hawaii tides.com
Usually during these weekend negative tides, you will see tour buses of tourists and locals of all ages crossing to the island.
I thought it would be great to have an event on the Chinaman's Hat island. There are a lot of local people who have not been to the island and may have been intimidated by the trek out. It will also give people a chance to get that smiley for the cache, Tail of the Lizard, on the island. And if you are adventurous, you can make the climb to the top of the hat to find a benchmark at the peak there.
TRANSPORTATION TO THE EVENT: For those who want to attend the event, you must find your own mode of transportation to Chinaman's Hat. Since it is a negative tide, you can easily walk out there. You can also use a watercraft (kayak, SUP, boogie board, inner tube) if you wish. If you are walking to the island (and plan on finding the cache on the island), it is highly recommended that you wear tabis or other sturdy water shoes!
I will be walking out to the island just for the fun of it. If you would like to join me, I will be stepping into the ocean at around 0730.
See you on the Hat!
DISCLAIMER: I will not be responsible for anyone's personal safety. You must get to and from the event by any means of your choice. The even ends at 0900. If you are walking, plan on leaving Chinaman's Hat to return to Kualoa Beach Park no later than 0930, before the tide gets too high! You must make arrangements for your own return trip!
