LLL: RAF Spilsby Spectacle
This is the location of one of many spectacle shaped hardstandings that were constructed for RAF Spilsby. If you are stood at the cache location you will be able to see some of the original concrete from the spectacle still in place and currently being used as a storage facility.
An improved design of the frying-pan hardstanding was devised using concrete loops, which aircraft could enter from one end and exit via the other end, without needing to make a circular turn. This design was known as a ‘spectacle’ hardstanding because of its shape.
