Brown Pelican
Brown Pelicans are large grey-brown birds with yellow heads and white necks and are found along the coasts of North America. They hunt by diving into the water from high in the air and stunning fish with the large impact and then scooping them up with the long pouch in its bill. Sometimes gulls will try to steal fish out of the Brown Pelican’s pouch as it is draining the water from the pouch after its dive. Brown Pelicans nearly disappeared in North America because the DDT pesticide caused them to lay thinner eggs that broke under the weight of incubating parents. Pesticide regulations have allowed them to make a full comeback.
Optional: In your log let us know if you were able to identify this bird while searching for caches along this trail.
