"Your Geekdom puzzles are too hard", I've been told.
Hopefully this should be a really easy Geekdom for you all
You can easily jump to Google and Wikipedia to do your research for this puzzle, but it could be beneficial with this mystery cache that you're going to learn a geeky trick to do with calendars.
I'd recommend you brush up on your knowledge of base seven. It may help later if you enjoy mental mathematics.
You'll need a calendar. Go grab one for this year and then read on...
STEP 1
First, examining your diary calendar, write down the day of the week that 4 April (aka April 4) falls upon.
Do the same for these four dates: 6/6, 8/8, 10/10 and 12/12.
Notice anything?
Now, write down the days of the week that both 5 September and 9 May fall (aka 5/9 and 9/5).
When you're done with that, write down the date for 7 November and 11 July (aka 7/11 and 11/7).
Finally, write down the day that the last date in February falls. 2021 isn't a leap year.
"Hey Neat," I hear you say! Let's call this day "Doomsday".
STEP 2
Let's expand the trick to different years, starting with the last year of the nineteen century (the year 1900).
To save you looking it up, "Doomsday" for 1900 is a Wednesday.
For each year that we move forward we need to advance the day... 1901 is a Thursday... 1902 is a Friday.... 1903 is a Saturday.... and because 1904 is a leap year, we double advance so 1904 is (missing Sunday out) a Monday.
Starting again at 1900, advancing every 12 years (1912) and it's a Thursday... add another twelve (1924) it's a Friday... and so on.
7 x 12 is 84, so 1984 was a Wednesday; 1996 it's a Thursday (with the advancing 12 years rule)... 1997 a Friday, 1998 a Saturday, 1999 a Sunday, and 2000 (a leap year) a Tuesday.
For this year (date of cache publication = 2021) it's a Sunday... but you've already discovered that.
If you're reading this in 2022, you're late for the party but it's a Monday.
Commit that to memory and you've now got a fun party trick.
STEP 3
Here's a list of fifteen events. Simply find numbers 1 to 7 for each event. If the event happens on multiple years, use a 0 instead.
A) The death of Jimmi Hendrix
B) NATO was founded
C) The death of Elvis Presley
D) The last time a Brit won the Wimbledon Men’s Singles final
E) The assassination of JFK
F) The death of Albert Einstein
G) Clement Atlee became prime minister
H) US Superbowl
I) Easter Sunday
J) The RMS Titanic sank
K) Adolf Hitler became Chancellor
L) The summit of Mount Everest was reached
