Geocache Description:

With approximately 3.5 miles of track, the Burt & Gamble Railway was the shortest of the area's logging railroads, built in 1879. A railroad grade is visible in the woods long after the track is pulled and the forest re-forests on and around the grade. Look for where the land is disturbed, where small valleys are filled in and small hills are dug out to make the grade level. Once you locate the railroad grade, locate the part of the grade the geocache is located on. In 1976 the railroad's entire grade was placed on the State Register of Historic Sites as part of the Alger County Historical Society's U. S. Bicentennial observance. It is suggested you ponder a moment what is was like to operate a steam driven locomotive along this grade, smoke pouring out of the stack, hissing from the driver pistons, and the low pitch rumble of steel wheels on steel rails, and hauling a load of huge pine logs logs to be dumped into the sawmill on East Bay at Grand Marais. Hopefully, a spark from the stack doesn't start a forest fire!
