Welcome to the Verwood United Reform Church
If you look at the building immediately to the right of the church you will notice another chapel. These two chapels on Manor Road have an interesting history.
There have been Independent Chapels or Meeting Houses in Verwood since the early 19th century - according to the church website this was the first Church in Verwood, founded in 1802 when some fearless missionaries came from Ringwood hoping to tame and convert the wild heathen on the heath! In 1877 a purpose built brick structure was erected in Manor Road to serve as both church and school. This is the building to the right which now houses the library and was one of the junior schools in the village until 1967 when Hillside School was built. In 1906, the newer chapel where you now stand was built for worship so that the other could remain dedicated solely as a school. It has an adjacent hall and underwent major improvements in 2000. Originally known as an Independent Church, it later became Congregational and since 1972 has been a United Reformed Church (Protestant Christian) which also includes Presbyterian and Church of Christ traditions.
