Geocache Description:

Standing Bear (Macunajin, c.1829-1908) was a Ponca chief and Native American civil rights leader. He successfully argued in U.S. District Court in 1879 in Omaha that Native Americans are 'persons within the meaning of the law". He was the first Native American judicially granted civil rights under American law. As the trial drew to a close, the judge allowed Chief Standing Bear to speak. Raising his right hand, Macunajin said - "My hand is not the color of yours, but if I prick it, the blood will flow and I shall feel pain. The blood is of the same color as yours. God made me and I am a Man."
