The Transwa AvonLink train service departs from Midland and Northam Stations, operating daily stopping in Toodyay.
The AvonLink service was introduced in September 1995 and was the first new country passenger rail service in Western Australia for 47 years. The service originally operated out of the East Perth Terminal, however in 2001 the service shifted to Midland Station. In 2013 the Troy Buswell, the then Minister for Transport, announced the AvonLink service would be scrapped and replaced by buses. After more than 3000 Wheatbelt residents signed a petition to retain the service, the State Government backflipped on its decision and the service continues to operate today.
The AvonLink is a WDA/WDB/WDC train built by United Goninan in Broadway, NSW. The first of the seven new rail cars entered service on 28 June 2004. The trains can travel at a top speed of 200kmh - however, track conditions and other train movements restrict their speed along the journey.
