#23 The Dogliest Detective vs. Conundrum Cat, Round One

The local TV news anchorwoman was very direct. "The infamous criminal, known as 'CC', has expanded her reach north to harass the people and police of Anchorage. I personally have heard from CC that she has committed a crime the police have not even discovered yet. Tomorrow I will get even more information."

Toby had heard of CC. She had a modus operandi of enlisting local thugs to carry out a crime and then giving clues to the press to ridicule the local law enforcement. Toby called the police commissioner to volunteer his support, but he was told in no uncertain terms that the police "are smart enough to handle any CC crime without outside help."

The next day the anchorwoman had huge ratings when she came on at five and with a gleam in her eye reported: "The police admitted today that the Anchorage Museum has been burglarized and valuable artifacts were stolen. This reporter has PERSONALLY heard directly from CC who wanted me to pass along this clue to the people of Anchorage:"

Toby was hurt and disappointed that the police wouldn't let him help. Nonetheless, he mulled over the clue in his mind as he traveled to his weekly ultimate frisbee football game near the Park Strip. He enjoyed playing the sport and was a star on his team.  As the game began, Toby got a couple of ideas.

"I will cover Kate," he volunteered. Toby knew Kate was a police officer in her day job. Throughout the game he distracted her with incessant teasing about the CC crime, leading to Toby getting open for several key scores.

At the traditional end-of-the-game handshake ceremony, Toby made sure to rub in his success by whispering to Kate "I was sooooo wide open -- it was like I was in the ________ where nobody lives." He then turned and ran back to his team with his tail wagging. Toby could feel Kate's wide-open eyes staring at him the whole way, but he did not look back.

After the game, Toby's team went out to a local establishment to celebrate. When the late news came on the TV, everyone hushed up to watch the live "BREAKING NEWS" coverage of the Police Commissioner announcing that "his brilliant police force" had recovered the CC loot.
