I was driving around aimlessly looking for hiding spots for geocaches when I turned off Old River Road and headed down Dentro De Lomas. At this spot a sign indicated the county-maintained road ended. In hindsight I guess the open gate should have served as a warning not to proceed but “county” sure sounds to me like “public” so I kept going a few hundred feet more. I noted some coordinates for a possible spot, watched a truck drive by in a moment of undetected foreshadowing, and then drove back the direction I came. Well now! The gate was not only closed in the two minutes that had transpired, but now also had a heavy duty linked chain securing it with several attached locks. No indication of who nearby might have a key or even who this land belongs to (I assume only private property can be locked up). With very few options I heroically took my Prius down the nearby soft dirt embankment to a path that meets up with the nearby Vista Del Mar Road. I hung this container as a warning beacon to future adventurers who do not happen to possess clairvoyant powers that tells them the road ahead is private.
