Geocache Description:

*** The Middy ***

The Petersfield to Midhurst railway - A.K.A. "The Middy" was built by the London & South Western Railway (LSWR) and had intermediate stations "Rogate  & Harting", which was actually at the village of Nyewood,  and Elsted which was actually at Elsted Marsh. The line opened on 1st September 1864 and closed on 5th February 1955 and most of the line and associated infrastructure was removed soon afterwards.

There are still some remains along the route and this small series of caches has been placed at or close to some of those points of interest.

See Gravelroots for more information on The Middy

and the BFI for black and white archive film of trains running on the line.

Ramshill Bridge

Ramshill Bridge

If you had stood here during the time of The Middy there would have been steam trains rumbling ovehead on the bridge crossing Ramshill. Today there is nothing to be seen of the bridge, which was blown up in 1957, but if you look South East across the road junction towards the parking co-ords, the trees you can see are on the remains of the railway embankment.

*** The Cache ***

Now look over the wooden fence behind the railings and you will see an artifact from the railway, the numbers you see on it are ABCDE

Note as some of the numbers are obscured you only need A, B, C & E

Now make your way to find the cache at

N51 00.B(E*2) (A+C) ,  W000 55.AA(B+E)

which is a short walk away.

Should only take 5-10 minutes and you'll be back at the car.

PLEASE NOTE: The roads close by are busy so take extra care with children and dogs, there are Pelican crossings at the junction to use if you need to cross the road.

Parking is available at the waypoint below, if you park in the Community Centre car park please check it's signeage for restrictions, there is also plenty of parking on the road outside the Community Centre which is parallel to what remains of the railway embankment.

Please take extra care not to block the exit point for ambulances (which is well signposted).
