Wadi Qurai is one of the less known hiking routes that is a short drive from Muscat. Navigating to the parking spot is straight forward using google maps. From the parking location you will see the Falaj system (narrow water channels) that leads into the canyon. This is the start of the marked hiking route that takes you deep into the canyon. Following the marked route, you will eventually reach the Cracking View! (GC4VZJW) Geocache. The hike is full of natural beauty but requires scrambling over slippery rocks, the reward is crystal clear water pools at the end of the trail. The trail itself is not easy going, but this cache is located close to the parking location. To get to it you will need to cross the falaj-viaduct which might not be suitable for children. Please use caution when rooting around for the container. Avoid using your hands and fingers when rooting around the rocks and cracks as there could be snakes or insects.
The ancient falaj irrigation systems found in Oman are classified as UNESCO world heritage sites. This less known falaj is part of that heritage. Following the hiking trail, you will get to appreciate the skills of the ancient builders who built these 1.5 km long water channels without modern tools and materials. The mixture of fascinating geology and true human ingenuity makes this trail a memorable one. This type of falaj is known locally as 'Aini meaning it originates from a spring. The other common type is the Dawoodi falaj named after king David who, according to local tradition, who built numerous falajs around Oman using the Jin as his workforce.
