Geocache Description:

Liberty Vista is the first of two vista points on the way up Hwy 4, the Ebbetts Pass Highway, before reaching Bear Valley.  The actual vista is a turnout at the top of a rise, but just past that there is a short little dirt road that takes you down to a flat parking area off the road.  The parking area is used by Caltrans for dumping rock and soil and also is a bit trashed but a short hike takes you to the true vista point which opens up to see the entire North Fork of the Stanislaus River Canyon.

The area is at about 6800' in elevation, mostly Granite, though look closely for inclusions of darker diorite.  The predominant vegetation here is oak, but not the type that you would expect at lower elevations.  Huckleberry Oak, Quercus vaccinifolia, is a dwarf species.  Look closely for acorns the size of huckleberries.  Pines, Junipers and Manzanita are also found here.

To access the cache, park at the west edge of the flat, then follow the use trail out to where it ends at a large boulder.  To avoid bushwhacking through the oak grove, hike below the largest boulder, then follow the contour along the side of the slope until you reach GZ.  You will be rewarded with some fine views.  This cache is not accessable when snow is on the ground.
