Griffins Mills, formally known as West Aurora, is a small hamlet located in East Aurora. Around the years 1806-1810, Abram Smith and his son Humphrey Smith purchased the land, dammed the river, and created a mill. A few years later in 1813, a family of Quakers moved in from Canada and bought the mill under Obadiah Griffin, hence naming it Griffins Mills. In 1822 Obadiah's wife died so the mill was sold. It ended up being sold many times throughout the years slowly growing to include a tavern, a church, a cemetary, a school house, two tannaries, and a few houses. It had a total of seven different owners until it was aquired by the Yaw brothers who were some of its most famous owners. They were well know throughout Western New York for having the most accurate lumber measurements and producing some of the finest buckwheat flour. They ran their buisness there for 56 years until in 1947 the mill was destroyed by a fire and closed for good. The foundation of the mill and the river they used can still be seen today from this lookout point. There are currently two active churches in the town and a cemetary which holds the graves of five Revolutionary War veterans.
