Background
JPSS is the Nation’s advanced series of polar-orbiting environmental satellites which supports global observations and forecasts, using low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites to predict and prepare for severe weather events such as hurricanes and blizzards. Each satellite carries at least four state-of-the-art instruments, and JPSS’s significant technological and scientific advancements in observations are used for severe weather prediction and environmental monitoring. These data are critical to the timeliness and accuracy of forecasts three to seven days in advance of a severe weather event. The JPSS-2 satellite will continue the polar-orbiting earth observations of its predecessor satellites. JPSS is a collaborative effort between NOAA and NASA. JPSS-2 is set to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 2am on November 1, 2022.
Event Details
Come join us at the Dick DeWees Community and Senior Center,1120 W Ocean Ave, Lompoc, CA as we celebrate this partnership and kick off the GeoTour. The first 250 geocachers to find the Nine original Landsat geocaches and Eight new JPSS geocaches that are part of this GeoTour and turn in their passports will earn a unique JPSS geocoin for their efforts.(For those who have found the previous 9 Landsat caches there is no need to find them again). Those attending this event will also earn a Community Celebration icon.
