Discover Telluride History! Tucked into this "Hard Rocks, Rough Lives" cache is fun historic photos and information. Beginning in the 1870s, prospectors came to the San Juan Mountains to find not only gold and silver, but also lead, copper, and zinc. The environment was harsh and rugged, with altitudes in excess of 10,000 feet, requiring significant adaptation in order to make mining profitable. Learn more about Telluride's old hospital (now the Telluride Historical Museum), as well as a deeper look into what mining was like in Telluride's early days.
