Geocache Description:

Cache is located at the old Texas Woman’s University Golf Course, which permanently closed in 2018.

New soccer fields and parking lots were constructed on the north end, and the existing golf cart trails are open to the public as walking and cycling trails.  The area is a treasure trove of a variety of beautiful trees, including cypress, pine, oak, cottonwood, and many more.

As for the cache title, the container at GZ is in close proximity to a large oak tree that is home to an active bee hive which has been there for at least 2 years, when I first discovered it while on a bike ride.  Since then, I check on it from time to time as the seasons change, watching it go dormant during the winter, then witnessing it come back to life in the Spring.

To spot the bees, stand at the base of the tree (see scenic waypoints) and look up about 10 to 12 feet and find a dead limb.  The bee hive, when active, can be seen topside of the dead limb close to the main trunk.  The visible part of the hive (on the date I hid the cache) was the size of a football.  It is hard to see at first, as it blends well with the tree bark, but once you see it, you won’t be able to un-see it. You can also see bees buzzing around above.

In close proximity to the Bee Tree, is a new and large wildflower garden that was installed this Spring, a lucky coincidence for the bees!

Note:  Google Maps satellite imagery still shows the old golf course configuration and does not show the new athletic fields or parking lots.  However, it still shows the existing trails that you can use on your walk to the cache.
