44° PARALLELO
I paralleli, come i meridiani, sono delle circonferenze immaginarie che circondano la terra. I meridiani sono 360 e il fondamentale passa per il distretto londinese di Greenwich; i paralleli sono invece 180, 90 a nord dell'equatore (nell'emisfero boreale) e 90 a sud (nell'emisfero australe). Formano un reticolato geografico che permette, tramite la latitudine e la longitudine (distanza angolare tra l'equatore/meridiano di Greenwich), di individuare la posizione di un punto sulla superficie terrestre.
L'Italia è compresa tra il 7° (ovest di Torino) ed il 18° meridiano (a est di Lecce) e tra il 47° (Trentino Alto Adige) ed il 37° parallelo (Pantelleria).
Il 44° parallelo attraversa l'Europa, il Mar Mediterraneo, l'Asia, l'Oceano Pacifico, il Nord America e l'Oceano Atlantico. A questa latitudine il sole è visibile per 15 ore e 29 minuti durante il solstizio d'estate e 8 ore e 53 minuti durante il solstizio d'inverno.
Infine il 44° parallelo, il territorio tra Lucca e Pistoia, seguiva il percorso della linea gotica (fu una poderosa opera difensiva fortificata costruita dall'Esercito tedesco nell'Italia centro-settentrionale durante le fasi finali della campagna d'Italia, nella seconda guerra mondiale).

Parallels, like meridians, are imaginary circles surrounding the earth. The meridians are 360 and the fundamental passes through the London district of Greenwich; the parallels are instead 180, 90 to the north of the equator (in the northern hemisphere) and 90 to the south (in the southern hemisphere). They form a geographical grid that allows, through latitude and longitude (angular distance between the equator / Greenwich meridian), to identify the position of a point on the earth's surface.
Italy is between the 7th (west of Turin) and the 18th meridian (east of Lecce) and between the 47th (Trentino Alto Adige) and the 37th parallel (Pantelleria).
The 44th parallel crosses Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, Asia, the Pacific Ocean, North America and the Atlantic Ocean. At this latitude the sun is visible for 15 hours and 29 minutes during the summer solstice and 8 hours and 53 minutes during the winter solstice.
Finally, the 44th parallel, the territory between Lucca and Pistoia, followed the path of the Gothic line (it was a mighty fortified defensive work built by the German Army in central-northern Italy during the final stages of the Italian campaign, in the Second World War world).
