This puzzle is a "cipher" type. A cipher is where a string of text is encoded in some way. Ciphers range from simple subsitution ciphers (Like A=1, B=2, etc.) to complex ciphers that use "keys" to unlock them. Ciphers have been used since the dawn of creation to encrypt messages like battle plans. There have also been more nefarious uses of ciphers and codes, many of which have never been solved.
