Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted Co ordinates but where you are stood is where the biggest tragedy in Louth occurred.

On the afternoon of Saturday 29th May 1920 there was a cloudburst over the Lincolnshire Wolds and in just 3 hours over four and a half inches of rain fell. Over the 22 Square miles of wolds countryside that all feeds into the river Lud, there was a total of 12 million tons of water with nowhere to go. The streams and tributaries that fed into the river Lud were mostly unkempt and natural dams were forming in the streams and when the weight of water was too much, the dams would break. One such dam at little Welton held back water up to 30 foot deep and when this gave way 8 million tons of water cascaded towards louth.
At 5pm, the water levels rose from the few inches you see today to a wall of water 14 foot deep and 50 yards wide within 20 minutes. The carnage it caused was horrendous, 23 people lost their lives including many children. 50 houses were destroyed beyond repair, 250 houses needed to be rebuilt, 500 houses had flood damage, 800 people were homeless. Many stories can be found at louth museum and on line, many personal accounts of the tragedy. Perhaps there are more ghosts in Louth that are part of this tragedy, time will tell.
