Mossel Bay has a rich maritime history - which could possibly go back to before Bartolomeu Dias, whose arrival in 1488 marked the first recorded landing by a European crew on South African shores.
The oldest known wreck in the area - nicknamed the ‘Soares Wreck’ after its fleet commander - dates to 1505.
These wrecks form a part of Mossel Bay’s attraction for scuba divers.
In the summer months - when the reefs become active breeding grounds, and the visibility is often at its best – these wrecks offers an amazing variety of species, which makes for very exciting diving.
It’s illegal to disturb any historical wreck, or to move or collect any items from a wreck, because that would destroy any chance that archaeologists might have of piecing together the ship’s story.”
