Geocache Description:

** The Middy ***

The Petersfield to Midhurst railway - A.K.A. "The Middy" was built by the London & South Western Railway (LSWR) and had intermediate stations "Rogate  & Harting", which was actually at the village of Nyewood,  and Elsted which was actually at Elsted Marsh. The line opened on 1st September 1864 and closed on 5th February 1955 and most of the line and associated infrastructure was removed soon afterwards.

There are still some remains along the route and this small series of caches has been placed at or close to some of those points of interest.

See  the BFI for black and white archive film of trains running on the line.

If you had been standing here in the days of The Middy there would have been trains rumbling overhead on the bridge which is now gone, though the abutments can be seen on both sides.

*** The Cache ***

At the published co-ordinates you will be able to see two white ESR signs on the bridge abutment, one is in the form:

PTM

AB CD

From the published co-ordinates head  (A+C)A metres on a bearing (B-C)A(B-C) degrees to find the cache.

Should only take 10-15 minutes and you'll be back at the car.

The stamp in the cache is not a swap, please leave it in the container.

The recommended parking is at the waypoint below due to the fact that there are heavy lorries from the nearby quarry using this road, and you can pick up "Baby Bear" from the parking spot.

Petersfield, Rogate, Elsted and Midhurst stations and a steam train on The Middy
