Geocache Description:

** The Middy ***

The Petersfield to Midhurst railway - A.K.A. "The Middy" was built by the London & South Western Railway (LSWR) and had intermediate stations "Rogate  & Harting", which was actually at the village of Nyewood,  and Elsted which was actually at Elsted Marsh. The line opened on 1st September 1864 and closed on 5th February 1955 and most of the line and associated infrastructure was removed soon afterwards.

There are still some remains along the route and this small series of caches has been placed at or close to some of those points of interest.

See  the BFI for black and white archive film of trains running on the line.

The pub at the published co-ordinates  was called The Railway Hotel in the time of The Middy and  was built to serve the station which was a short way along the road, but has been renamed since the closure of the line.

If you had looked over the Southern side of the bridge at stage 1 in the days of The Middy you would have been looking down onto the station platform, which was where the light industrial units now stand.
