About the Bellevue Hotel
The Bellevue Hotel was built in 1901 by Thomas Wilkins. It consisted of ten bedrooms and two sitting rooms and bar areas. In 1903 Wilkins transferred the hotel to Thomas Sayer. The Bellevue Hotel lost its license around 1924, due to the Licensing Court's downgrade in the number of hotels, as a result of the over-supply per head of population.
During World War II the building was taken over by the military and was used as a collection house and post office by the army units from Victoria. The code name for this establishment when used for His Majesty's mail was the 'Wendy House'.
The Hotel was demolished prior to 1943. The land has since provided a public park which is now known as Todd Park. The park commemorates New Zealand born Lieutenant Colonel Thomas John Todd (1873-1919) who led the 10th Light Horse Regiment in the Boer War (South Africa) and World War I. Todd was the proprietor of the Bellevue Hotel (1909-1912), manager of Todd's Brickyard and a leader in the establishment of the Bellevue Mechanics Institute.
