About the Bellevue Mechanics Institute
Mechanics Institutes were the forerunners of public libraries and adult education in Australia. The Mechanic Institute movement started in Britain in the 1800s and was committed to the idea of providing education to working men, particularly in technical subjects.
Citizens of Bellevue were determined to build their own Mechanics Institute and collectively raised the funds by subscription to see the Institute. One of the key leaders in the establishment of the Bellevue Mechanics Institute was Thomas John Todd. The first meeting to form the Bellevue Mechanics Institute was held on 12 April 1908. Todd served on the Institute's committee and received a resounding send off in the Hall in 1914 when he left serve with the 10th Light Horse at Gallipoli.
The Bellevue Hall was officially opened two July 1909. It was the venue for many dances and movies were also showen there; the old projection box is still visible from inside the building. It was taken over by the Midland Junction Council (now City of Swan) in 1938, at the request of the Bellevue Mechanics Institute, and the building leased back to them.
The Hall is now used by the Scouts Association of Western Australia.
