New Headington was originally a village outside the city of Oxford.
It was mostly built between the 1850s and 1900.
A Chapel of Ease (now the Scout hall in Perrin st.) was built in 1870 to encourage church attendance by the villagers, as it was rather a long walk for the elderly and frail to the parish church of St. Andrews in Old Headington.
By the beginning of the 20th century, the chapel had become too small for the growing population and a new, larger church was needed.
£1000 for a new church was pledged by Mrs Morrell of Headington Hill Hall provided the villagers could raise the same amount.
This was achieved and a new church designed by Arthur Blomfield &son was built on Lime Walk after a large house had been demolished to make room for it.
The foundation stone was laid by the Bishop of Oxford on July 31st 1909 and the completed church was consecrated on May 29th 1910.
With the opening of the church, the new parish of Highfield was created.
