Headington has had a strong tradition of Methodism going back to the early 1800s. initially fuelled by the blocking of the old funeral path from Headington Quarry to the parish church of St. Andrews in Old Headington.Blocking this direct route meant it was a much longer walk carrying heavy coffins to the church which was unaceptable to the people of Quarry. The villagers turned their back on St. Andrews church and led by James Coppock, arranged to have Methodist ministers hold meetings in one of their houses. Numbers grew and in 1830 a proper chapel was built but by 1860 a bigger chapel was needed and this was built in Quarry High St.
When the new village of New Headington was built nearby, growing populations meant a Methodist chapel was needed here and so one was built in New High St. in 1889. This chapel is now the church hall and you will need to visit it in order to gather some numbers.
The old chapel had become too small with the ever growing numbers of people and especially with the expanding car factory and the influx of workers which included many Welsh chapel goers.
The present church was built in 1932 in Lime Walk and lies behind the origial chapel.
