Geocache Description:

This is part of my series to commerate Twenty Years of Geocaching in New Jersey. (TYOG)

The Manunka Chunk tunnel is a twin set of tunnels approximately 800 feet long. Constructed as part of the Warren Railroad through White Township NJ, in 1854. The tunnel was bore through soft shale, taking a quarter of the time it took to construct Van Nest Gap Tunnel on the same line. It received a 2nd track and bore in 1869 by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad who now operated the line.

The tunnel had a design problem on the eastbound portal. The natural structure around the two portals sagged which cause several collapes. The western portal was constructed of fine masonry consisting of stones and bricks, which give it it's icon image that geocachers know.

GC82B5 - Manunka Chunk Tunnels was hidden by Scottmandude on 08/19/2002 and immediately became a hit with geocachers and was often a "must do" cache to celibrate milestone finds. Unfortunately, the tunnels have been come unstable in the last few years and they are now closed.

I learned about the tunnel from my brother in the early 1990's and used to visit with friends or anyone that I could convince to head off into the scary darkness with me. Admittedly, this cache is not nearly as adventurous as the Manunka Chunk Tunnels, and should be an easy find.

There is a custom stamp of the tunnels in the cache for all your letterboxing needs.

Enjoy the hunt!
