Geocache Description:

Minnesota Spirit Quest

The cache is not located near a grave... Please be respectful and cache in, trash out. Also, please only search for cache during daylight hours.

At the posted coordinates, you should look for the headstone of C. F. Becker (Christian Friedrich Becker), born in 1821 and died in 1901, at the age of 79. And his wife, Caroline (Vacque) Becker, who lived for 8 more years and died in 1909. They were both born in the province of Brandenburg, Germany, which was then known as Prussia. They came from the area near the village of Tornow, Kreis Oberharnim in Brandenburg, just east of Berlin. They were married there in 1841.

In 1855 Christian, Caroline and their 5 young children went to the port in Hamburg, Germany and sailed for America. They arrived at Castle Garden, New York City in July of 1855. They made their way by boat through the Erie Canal and Great Lakes, or by using the very early railroads system of this time, to settle in Le Ray Township, Dodge Co., WI where they remainded for 12 years. They moved to Le Sueur County, Minnesota in 1867 and homesteaded a farm in Section 20 of Sharon Township, just a few miles from this cemetery. They were members of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Le Sueur. They had 10 children born in both Germany and the United States of whom 7 survived to adulthood. They stayed in Le Sueur County the remainder of their lives, retiring from the farm in 1880.

The reason I know all these things is because Christian & Caroline were my great great great grandparents. I am proud to know that I am a descendant of these early Minnesota Pioneers.

The gravestone of Christian is getting hard to read, so referencing the headstone for Caroline, the day she was born & died is A and the last two digits of the year she was born 18__ is BC.
