Murraysburg is one of the old Cape Colony;s 'Kerkderpe". The Cape Colony developed enormously through the nineteenth centuary with the founding of about 70 towns and villages and the growth of its economy and infra-structure during this seminal era. Murraysburg was founded in 1855 when the Duch Reformed Church in Graaff-Reinet, in response to requests from the community, decided to establish a church and congregation there. A commission was established to investigate and report back and in due course a portion of the farm "Eenzaamheid" was acquired from Mr J J Burger. The town was laid out on this portion and plots were sold to raise funds for the construction of the church. The town was named after Ds Andrew Murray of Graaff- Reinet. It was and is still the center of a prosperous farming community based mainly on marino and dorper sheep farming.
