HISTORIEN OM GLASSBLÅSEREN I GLASSHYTTA.
På slutten av 60-tallet brakte fiskeren Åsvar Tangrand noen glasskavler med seg hjem for å bruke dem på en ny og kreativ måte. Av disse skapte han bl.a. fargerike dører og vinduer.
På denne tiden utviklet Åsvar også “Lofotruna”, symbolet som fanger essensen av Lofoten, med mennesket, fisken og båten. “Lofotruna” ble først laget som veggdekorasjon i smijern og glass. Fasinasjonen for glass og kunstnerisk virksomhet førte han videre på en reise til Finland. Sammen med andre norske kunsthåndverkene ble han introdusert for finsk glasskunst i Rihimekki i 1974. På hjemturen fra Finland bestemte Åsvar seg for å starte med glassblåsing i Lofoten.
I 1976 ble det installert smelteovn for glass i kjellerverkstedet på Vikten. Med god hjelp fra den finske glassblåseren Pertti Merilaiinen, som han hadde truffet i Finland, ble landsdelens første glassblåseri startet våren 1976. Samtidig som dette skjedde, begynte turistene for alvor å finne veien til Lofoten.
Utover 80-tallet var det stor produksjon i glasshytta og en økende turiststrøm til Vikten. Et innovativt miljø med glassblåsing og keramikkverksted var blitt til. I 1992 ble glassproduksjonen flyttet over i et nytt fantastisk bygg i fjæresteinene på Vikten – Glasshytta.
I nabobygget finner du Keramikktårnet, hvor kona Åse sto for produksjon av vakre bruksgjenstander og dekorasjon, med inspirasjon fra den unike naturen rundt seg.
Nå er både Åse og Åsvar borte, men noen av barna deres bærer tradisjonen og håndverket videre, med vakker glasskunst og unik keramikk. I Glasshytta kan du se glassblåsere i arbeid nesten hele sommeren.

THE STORY OF THE GLASSBLOWER IN GLASSHYTTA
At the end of the 60 ‘s the fisherman Åsvar Tangrand brought some glass “kavler” (balls of glass, used in fishery) home with him to use them in a new and artistic way. Of these, he created colorful doors and windows.
Åsvar developed at the same time “Lofotruna”. The symbol in a stylistic way, captures the essence of the Lofoten Islands, with the fish, the boat and the man. “Lofotruna” was first made as a wall decoration in wrought iron. Here too was glass “kavler” used in a refined way.
Fascination of glass and artistic operations led him on a journey to Finland. Together with other Norwegian artists Åsvar was introduced for Finnish glass art in Rihimekki in 1974. On the trip back from Finland, he decided to start with glassblowing in Lofoten. In 1976, a glass melting oven was installed in his basement. With help from the Finnish glassblower Pertti Merilaiinen, whom he had met on his trip to Finland, Northern Norway’s first glass studio was founded in Vikten, in the spring of 1976.
Meanwhile, the first tourists found their way to the Lofoten Islands. Throughout the 80’s, there were large production in Glasshytta and a growing tourist flow to Vikten. An innovative environment with glass and pottery had grown. In 1992, the glass production take place in Glasshytta, a fantastic building in the rocky seaside.
In a harmonious coexistence with Glasshytta, you will find the Pottery Tower. It was Åsvars wife Åse Tangrand who did juggle with clay and created both beautiful and practical tools. The pottery Tower leads you up to the facility’s coffee shop, through exhibited pottery articles.
As for now, both Åse and Åsvar is gone, and some of their children now are the bearer of their legacy, as skilled glassblowers, and ceramic artists who with pride carries their parents unique work on.
