La chiesa è citata dal IX secolo nei documenti dell'archivio arcivescovile di Lucca alla cui giurisdizione apparteneva. La parrocchia di Cevoli nel 1260 era la prima succursale della pieve di San Marco in Sovigliana. Fu restaurata nel XV secolo, ingrandita di nuovo e divisa in tre navate nel 1710, epoca della consacrazione fatta dal vescovo di San Miniato, dieci anni prima che fosse eretta in parrocchia plebana.
Nell'antico quadro dell'altar maggiore rappresentante la Beata Vergine con i santi Pietro e Paolo, attualmente nel coro, appare il nome dell'autore Andrea da Pisa, che lo dipinse nel 1490. Contemporanei di età sembrano alcuni affreschi superstiti nelle pareti della chiesa, e i vetri dipinti in un finestrone.
Vi si conserva un bellissimo crocifisso romanico, un dipinto con la Madonna con il Bambino e i Santi Pietro e Paolo, firmato da Andrea da Pisa e datato 1490, e alcuni affreschi frammentari, probabilmente coevi.

The church is mentioned from the ninth century in the documents of the archiepiscopal archive of Lucca to whose jurisdiction it belonged. The parish of Cevoli in 1260 was the first branch of the parish of San Marco in Sovigliana. It was restored in the fifteenth century, enlarged again and divided into three naves in 1710, the time of consecration made by the bishop of San Miniato, ten years before it was erected as a plebana parish.
In the ancient painting of the high altar representing the Blessed Virgin with Saints Peter and Paul, currently in the choir, appears the name of the author Andrew of Pisa, who painted it in 1490. Contemporaries of age seem some surviving frescoes in the walls of the church, and the glass painted in a window.
It houses a beautiful Romanesque crucifix, a painting with the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Paul, signed by Andrea of Pisa and dated 1490, and some fragmentary frescoes, probably coeval.
