Here is an interesting fact about chickens. Chickens don't look down while they are scratching the ground looking for food. That's because they have eagle eyes. Well, not literally, but it's true that chickens have excellent vision. In general, better than humans.
Chickens can see in color like humans do (red, yellow, blue) AND are able to see ultra-violet light that allow them to see far more colors and shades than humans can. Their UV vision helps them sense which chicks are healthiest, since growing feathers reflect UV light.
Chickens also have a heightened ability to sense slight movements such as bugs creeping through the grass.
Farmer MacDonald was WELL aware of these facts and when one of his chickens seemed to be struggling to see, he decided to call his vet, Dr. Rosentree.
Dr. Rosentree came out and she observed Charlie the chicken. She noticed he kept looking down at the ground while scratching which was very unusual.
She thought that Charlie could use some help and decided to check things out. She grabbed a test out of her coat pocket to help her decide what prescription he would need for a pair of glasses. She started at the top and made her way down until she got all the information she needed to help her order the best possible lenses for Charlie's new glasses. He ended up having 20/40 vision which isn't too terrible for a human (normal is 20/20), but devastating for a chicken!
When Dr. Rosentree returned with the glasses and Charlie tried them on, he asked look over the info she used to determine his prescription. Looking it over, he realized that the same source of information the vet used for his glasses would help find a geocache! Do you see what Charlie saw?
