Geocache Description:

This cache is (hopefully) the first of a series of multi's designed to help you explore some Christchurch suburbs. I'm working from the suburb boundaries in Google Maps, which I've come across in a number of other places.

Burnside

Neighbouring suburbs: Harewood, Bishopdale, Bryndwr, Fendalton, Ilam, Avonhead, Christchurch Airport.

Name origin: named because of the number of small streams in the area.

Until the second world war, most of Burnside was farmland. When Waimairi Cemetery (WP2) was established in 1911, it was well outside the city limits. Farmland was rapidly developed in the 60s and 70s. Many schools were established in that period, including Burnside High School (the city's biggest) and Cobham Intermediate School.

There is a substantial commercial area in the north west of the suburb. It includes the Canterbury Technology Park (WP4), which was developed from the late 1980s. The late 80s building west of WP4 was originally occupied by Aoraki Coportation, developers of the Jade Software that Jade Stadium was named after.

Burnside has a number of attractive parks. The homestead of William Boag's Bunside Farm was in Burnside Park (WP3). Jellie Park (WP1) is home to a well used pool and fitness centre, and a popular disc golf course. Westburn Reserve hosts a mini road bike park. Nepal Reserve is on the edge of the old Lake Bryndwr area. The developers of the subdivision that lies between the reserve and Wairakei Rd must have done a good job compacting the fill used to build up the land as the houses came through the quakes pretty well.

You will need to visit four waypoints to work out where the cache is hidden.

Final: S 43 29.ABC E 172 33.DEF.

  • AE = sum of ages on an eye-catching memorial at WP2 (Waimairi Cemetery).
  • B = letters in either of the quoted words on the plaque at WP3 (Burnside Park).
  • C = number of flagpoles on the traffic island at WP4 (Technology Park).
  • D = number of letters in line 3 of the plaque at WP1 (Jellie Park).
  • F = number of pieces of black stone that make up one of the two formations on the traffic island at WP4 (Technology Park).

Checksum of A to F: 38.

Parking at WP4 will be difficult during office hours (you should always be able to find a park in nearby Juniper Place at the given parking coordinates).

Cache is pill bottle hanging in a tree (the one to the right of the stump). A little above head height.
