The Gilbert River starts near Manoora north of Saddleworth at an elevation of 399m and ends at an elevation of 93.2m merging with the Light River just downstream at Hamley Bridge. The Light River continues west to the Gulf St Vincent. The explorer John Hill named it in April 1839 after Colonial storekeeper Thomas Gilbert, who was responsible for all government stores. Explorer Edward John Eyre crossed the river in May 1839 on his northern expedition.
