The Series

Do you love mystery caches?  Do you love D/T (Difficulty/Terrain) ratings?  if so, we have a GREAT series for you!!!

The Jackson County Agritourism Geo-Trail 81 series (JCAT-81) has been placed for YOU! We do have to fess up that the series isn’t actually in Jackson County, but it’s a stone’s throw away and an awesome set of caches.  If you complete all 81, you will have completed an entire D/T grid. Total fizzy awesomeness!

The majority of the caches are hidden in Sandy Creek Park.  There is an entrance fee of $2 per person to enter.  Current park hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed on Mondays. (Note: Hours can change-- please check with the park before making your trip plans)

The caches are hidden in a variety of containers and styles.  The puzzles will help build your puzzle-solving skills.  Be on the lookout for some JCAT-81 Puzzle-Solving events where we will help you solve some of the tougher ones.

This series is a collaborative effort of “The Puzzle Posse”!  The Puzzle Posse consists of Bragger407, GeoMonkeyTiger!, LaFavorite Cacher, and poeanne.

This Cache

This cache is rated a 4.0/1.5.  The puzzle should be fairly straightforward, but will be a challenge to solve.  The cache is a regular-sized lock and lock.  It will be a bit of a hike to get to GZ, but most of it will be on established trails. Be sure to bring water, bug spray, and possibly a snack!  Note that you may see some fences marking private property.  Please respect the fence lines as the cache is on the park side of the fences...

This Puzzle

(This puzzle brought to you by poeanne)

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates.

Farmer MacDonald was looking to put in new homes for his chickens.  The goal was for the chickens to find their perfect home to optimize the number of eggs laid.   He decided to try to work out the opitmal design.  He started making some notes:

  1. The Rhode Island Red lays 40 fewer eggs than the chicken that lives in the A-frame.
  2. The six chickens are Sybil, the Ameraucana, the chicken that lays 240 eggs a year, the chicken that lives in the free-range coop, the chicken that lives in the multi-level coop, and the chicken that lays 200 eggs a year.
  3. The chicken that lays 220 eggs a year doesn’t live in a nesting box.
  4. Hennifer Anniston lays 10 more eggs a year than the Rhode Island Red.
  5. The Sussex chicken lays more eggs than the chicken that lives in the portable coop.
  6. Neither the chicken that lays 250 eggs a year nor Sybil is a Leghorn chicken.
  7. Of the chicken that lives in the multi-level coop and Hennifer Anniston, one is the Leghorn, and the other lays 210 eggs a year.
  8. The Wyandotte chicken doesn’t live in a chicken run.
  9. The portable coop either houses the chicken that lays 250 eggs a year or Oprah Henfrey.
  10. Sybil is not a Sussex chicken.
  11. Lucy is either a Golden Comet or lays 200 eggs a year.
  12. The free range chicken lays 40 fewer eggs a year than Oliverina.

He then mapped everything out to a grid that helped him see the choices.  You can use his same grid here

Farmer MacDonald's Grid

The goal was to match each chicken to their new coup and the number of eggs that they laid in the first year.

After a bit, he had worked everything out and had a plan!  And in addition, he realized he could hide some geocaching coordinates using his answer!

He decied that if anyone could type the answer to four questions into the Certitude checker below,, he would give the coordinates to the cache!

Here are the four questions:

  1. What is the type of chicken that will lay 200 eggs per year?
  2. How many eggs will Hennifer Anniston lay?
  3. What type of Pen will Oliverina be best suited for?
  4. What is the name of the chicken that should ideally be in an A-Frame coop?

Enter the four answers as one long word (No spaces, no punctuation) in the certitude checker below to get the answer!
