The Hill River is an ephemeral river rising about 3 kilometres east of Penwortham and then flows northward for about 37 kilometres. Hill River runs roughly parallel to and 3km west of Hutt River. Near the town of Spalding it becomes a tributary of the Broughton River shortly before the Hutt merges also. It starts at an elevation of 341m and ends at an elevation of 296m.

According to Edward John Eyre, he discovered the river in 1839 and named it after explorer John Hill who discovered its twin river the Hutt.
