Geocache Description:

South Australian Rivers - Murray River

Outlet/Basin: Murray Darling
Course: 2508km
Murray Mouth Coordinates are S35.55595 E138.87961.
Murray River enters McHughes Lake at S35.36510 E139.36587 near Nalpa.

The Murray River flows through New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia and is Australia’s longest river at 2508km. 38 creeks and rivers flow into the Murray River which includes five of the next six longest rivers of Australia (the Murrumbidgee, Darling, Lachlan, Warrego and Paroo Rivers). Together with that of the Murray, the catchments of these rivers form the Murray-Darling basin, which covers about one-seventh the area of Australia. 14 locks exist along its course, built between 1922 (Blanchetown) and 1939 (Yarrawonga Weir).

The Murray rises in the Australian Alps, draining the western side of Australia's highest mountains, then meanders northwest across Australia's inland plains. Tom Groggin is one of the first accessible locations near the start of the river, accessible from the Alpine Way, just 15km southwest of Mount Kosciuszko (Australia’s highest peak).

It forms the border between the states of New South Wales and Victoria as it flows into South Australia. From an east–west direction it turns south at Morgan for its final 315 km reaching the eastern edge of Lake Alexandrina. The water then flows through several channels around Hindmarsh Island and Mundoo Island. There it is joined by lagoon water from The Coorong to the south-east before emptying into the Great Australian Bight through the Murray Mouth, 10 km east of Goolwa South.

The cache is a 5 litre tube, plenty of room for swaps. It contains a pen and log book. Please take care removing and replacing the lid. Enjoy
