Geocache Description:

This is a cemetery.....

Lives are commemorated - deaths are recorded - families are reunited - memories are made tangible - and love is undisguised. This is a cemetery.

Communities accord respect, families bestow reverence, historians seek information and our heritage is thereby enriched.

Testimonies of devotion, pride and remembrance are cast in bronze to pay warm tribute to accomplishments and to the life - not the death - of a loved one. The cemetery is homeland for memorials that are a sustaining source of comfort to the living.

A cemetery is a history of people - a perpetual record of yesterday and a sanctuary of peace and quiet today. A cemetery exists because every life is worth loving and remembering - always.

Pine Lodge Cemetery is a beautiful cemetery located 15kms east of Shepparton. Even though it is 15kms from Shepparton, the majority of people buried here are former Shepparton residents.

For those who remember the Walsh Street Killings, policeman Damian Eyre from Shepparton is buried here as is lesser known murder victim Anne Smerdon from Kyabram who was one of three killed in a house in Burwood by Ashley Coulston in July 1992.

In 1998 when digging a grave for a legitimate burial, the gravedigger at Pine Lodge Cemetery made the gruesome discovery of the body of Rocky Iaria wrapped in plastic. Mr Iaria had been shot. He had last been seen on September 6, 1991. Graves are usually dug for two interments, so for instance a husband and wife can be buried in the same grave, one on top of the other. In this case, presumably overnight, the murderers have chosen a recently used grave, dug all the dirt out, put Mr Iaria's body in the grave and refilled it. Due to being recently used the disturbance of earth would not have been noticed by anyone who worked at the cemetery the next day. It would have been the perfect crime and Iaria's body would never have been discovered if not for the grave being redug seven years later when the second member of the family passed away. As at August 2021, no one has been charged with Mr Iaria's murder.

This cemetery is predominantly a lawn cemetery although approximately 20 graves from the late 1800's early 1900's have "survived".
