COVID-19 Alert Level 2

This event is being held under the standard Alert Level 2 conditions, including the wearing of face covering, keeping track of where you have been and maintaining good hygiene.  We will have a contact tracing QR code specific for the event.  As we will be in a private space for the event, the venue has advised that there are no additional requirements except that event participants will not be able to go to the bar to order drinks.  The venue's floor staff will be taking orders.  For the dinner, everyone just needs to remain seated.  The venue has moved our event to the Katherine Mansfield Room as numbers are expected to be less than those in previous years.  Dinner will be in the dining room downstairs.

GIFF

Geocaching International Film Festival is an annual showcase of the creativity of geocachers through short family-friendly films. Submitted by geocachers worldwide - for geocachers - each film is up to 4 minutes long. The finalists are being chosen by a Geocaching HQ panel of judges. The entire film reel is approximately one hour long.

(GIFF took a brief “intermission” in 2020.)

The venue

We have chosen this location as it is close to the public transport hub in Wellington, with buses and trains on offer.

This site has also some historical significance. The Thistle Inn was built in 1840 and received the second liquor licence issued in New Zealand. It is now New Zealand's oldest surviving tavern and restaurant operating from its original site. In July 1866 it was burnt to the ground but by December that year it was back operating. You can see the original beer cellar through the glass floor. It is a Category 1 historic place building and was completely restored in 2004.

Before reclamation started in Wellington, the building was only a few metres from the harbour. Patrons (included, according to legend, Te Rauparaha - the Ngati Toa warrior chief) often arrived by boat.

Please indicate numbers

Dinner and drinks are available at the venue at your own cost. Please indicate in your “Will Attend” note:

  1. how many are coming for the GIFF screening, and also
  2. how many are likely to stay for dinner.

An early indication will be appreciated, even if you are not 100% certain at this stage. We can finalise these numbers closer to the time.

* The showing of the 2021 GIFF films requires approval by Geocaching HQ, following publication of this Event listing. Such approval is being indicated by a corresponding bookmark in the Bookmark Lists box on this listing page.

After you have logged “Attended” at this event (or another registered GIFF event held during 11-21 November 2021), you can also attempt to get the official GIFF 2021 digital souvenir.  This year, the GIFF souvenir can be earned by discovering a special trackable code in the GIFF reel itself!
