Geocache Description:

Kamenice

Vessels carved in stone blocks have been used for thousands of years in the Mediterranean, and even on our shores, to store and store oil. They were made in different dimensions and even very large, and the master stonemason was paid with the amount of oil that fits in the oyster. For some extremely large oysters, the story of “this and that” year was often passed down through the generations in one family, when the olives bore so much that even the largest oyster was full to the brim. There were cases when such oysters were brought into the future tavern before it was completely walled up - because they could not pass through the door - or even if they were transported by sea tied between two gajets.

At this place, with a donation to the locals, a large number of oysters were deposited, 26 of them, which their owners no longer needed. Over the decades, their numbers have declined for a variety of reasons.

Today, oysters have more or less lost their original function, but with their naturalness, warmth and patina of antiquity, they have permanently remained an inseparable part of the soul, collective memory and identity of the Mediterranean farmer, testifying to thousands of years of hard life on karst. Therefore, oysters made of this very hard karst and filled with its fruits will always keep us firmly attached to the land from which we originated.
